Your free Gemini access gets weaker on October 9

Drafted through my n8n + AI pipeline, edited by me.

Google's free tier for the Gemini app loses two of its three models on October 9, and the change arrives with no banner, no popup, and no email telling anyone it happened.

What's actually changing on October 9

The free tier moves from three available models down to one: Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite. Flash and Pro both go away for free accounts. AI Plus, the $4.99 a month tier, loses Pro but keeps Flash-Lite and Flash. AI Pro, at $19.99 a month, keeps all three models and also picks up the Deep Think feature that used to be reserved for the top Ultra plan. Google is framing this as a reshuffle, but for anyone on the free or Plus tier, it is a straightforward downgrade in output quality.

Why free Gemini access matters more than it looks

Most owners do not think of a free chat tab as a business tool, which is exactly why this change is easy to miss. The people actually affected are usually the ones with the least reason to notice: whoever drafts customer emails in a browser tab, whoever summarizes a contract or proposal before a call, whoever runs a quick spreadsheet analysis instead of opening Excel, and solo owners who never set up a paid AI account because the free one was good enough.

  • Staff drafting client-facing emails or replies in the free Gemini app
  • Anyone summarizing contracts, proposals, or long documents before a meeting
  • Spreadsheet or data questions run through chat instead of formulas
  • Owners using Gemini as their only AI tool, with no paid account anywhere

What to check before the switch takes effect

  1. 1

Find out who is actually using it

Ask directly: who on the team opens gemini.google.com or the app for work tasks, and what do they use it for. Most owners genuinely do not know.

  2. 2

    Sort tasks by stakes

Low-stakes drafting, like a rough outline, can survive a weaker model. Anything that touches a customer, a contract, or a number that gets reported on cannot.

  3. 3

Price out AI Pro for the people who need it

At $19.99 a user per month, it is cheaper than the time lost to a bad draft that reaches a client before anyone catches it.

  4. 4

    Write the one-line rule down

Something as simple as 'customer replies and anything with numbers get the paid model' turns a vague worry into a policy anyone can follow.

Comparison of Gemini free tier model access before and after October 9, 2026

  • Flash-Lite available
  • Flash available
  • Pro available
The free tier goes from three models to one, and nothing in the product tells your team the output just got weaker.

The real risk is not losing a tool

It is that the output keeps arriving in the same chat window, looking the same, while the model behind it quietly got weaker. Nobody flags a slightly off email draft or a slightly wrong spreadsheet summary until it has already reached a customer.

Does this change touch Gemini inside Workspace, like Gmail or Docs?

This specific change targets the standalone Gemini app's free and Plus tiers. If your team uses Gemini features bundled into a Workspace plan, check that plan's own terms separately rather than assuming it moved the same way.

Is the $19.99 a month AI Pro plan worth it for a small team?

If someone on your team uses it daily for client-facing drafts or real analysis, yes, it pays for itself fast. If it is occasional and low-stakes, a free tier on a different tool may cover it just as well.

If you are not sure which of your free tools just got quietly weaker this month, or you would rather build on something that does not depend on whichever free tier survives the next pricing change, bring me your current setup and we will work out what actually needs a paid seat.
