What the Stilla acquisition means for Meta Business Agent

Drafted through my n8n + AI pipeline, edited by me.

Meta Business Agent handles customer messages for more than a million businesses on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. On September 9, Meta acquired the startup whose technology is about to make it a lot more capable, and a lot more woven into the tools you already run.

What Meta Business Agent actually does

Business Agent launched in June 2026 as Meta's tool for automating customer conversations inside WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram direct messages. It answers questions, recommends products from your catalog, and can complete a sale inside the same chat thread, no separate website visit required. Uptake has been fast: Meta says more than one million businesses now use it, most of them the kind of service and retail operations that already live in their customers' DM inbox.

Why Meta bought Stilla, and it's not what you'd guess

Stilla wasn't a messaging company. The Stockholm startup, founded in 2024 and out of public beta since January 2026, built a workplace AI teammate that plugged into more than 3,000 business tools including Slack, GitHub, Google Drive, HubSpot, and Stripe. Its pitch was a single agent that remembers a team's context and follows their permission rules across every one of those tools, priced at $40 a month per organization, with customers including Spotify, Ramp, Legora, and Synthesia. Meta is folding that memory-and-permissions engine into Business Agent, the product a million businesses already use to answer WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram messages. The likely result is an agent that remembers more about a specific customer and order over time, and that can reach further into the tools you already run your business on.

What this means for your Meta Business Agent setup

None of this is a reason to switch Business Agent off. For a service business that already answers half its questions over WhatsApp, an agent with better memory and wider reach into your tools is a real upgrade. It is a reason to treat this the way you'd treat any vendor that just changed hands: check what you've given it access to, and make sure your own records don't depend on it staying exactly as it is today.

  1. 1

    Audit your permissions

Check exactly what Business Agent can see and do: your product catalog, order data, WhatsApp Business API, and any connected payment flow. Meta doesn't publish a running changelog when scope changes.

  2. 2

Keep your CRM as the source of truth

Treat the chat thread as a channel, not your system of record. Log every order and customer detail Business Agent handles into your own CRM or spreadsheet the same day it happens.

  3. 3

Export conversation history on a schedule

Pull a copy of customer conversations and order confirmations regularly, weekly is enough for most service businesses, so a platform change never costs you a customer record.

  4. 4

    Write down your manual fallback

Decide now how you'll answer a WhatsApp or Instagram message if Business Agent goes down or changes behavior overnight, and who on your team is responsible for checking it.

Meta's acquisition history says move carefully

Meta bought the customer service platform Kustomer for roughly a billion dollars in 2020 and sold it at a reported 75 percent loss in 2023. It shut down Workplace from Meta, an internal collaboration tool used by thousands of companies, in 2024. An acquisition announcement is not a promise that a feature stays put.

Meta acquires Stilla for its memory and permissions tech

Business Agent went from launch to a million businesses in three months, then Meta bought the memory and permissions engine to push it further.

If WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram DMs are already part of how you handle customers or bookings, this is a reasonable week to map out what's automated, what's logged where, and what happens if any of it changes. Bring me your current setup and we can look at it together.
