What Gemini in Chat means for your small business

Drafted through my n8n + AI pipeline, edited by me.

Ask Gemini in Chat is Google's new AI command line inside Google Chat, and it starts reaching Business and Enterprise Workspace accounts on August 26. Press Ctrl+G (Command+G on a Mac) and you get a search bar that can pull from Gmail, Drive, and Calendar, draft a reply, or summarize a thread, all without leaving the chat window.

For a small service business running on Google Workspace, this is the biggest change to how AI shows up in daily tools since Gemini first landed in Gmail. There is nothing new to buy or install. It shows up inside an app your team already has open all day, which is exactly why it deserves five minutes of attention before it deserves a shrug.

What Gemini in Chat actually does

  • Search across Gmail, Drive, and Calendar from one command bar
  • Draft messages, summarize threads, and generate images on request
  • Schedule meetings and manage tasks without switching apps
  • Organize related messages into a persistent session instead of a one-off chat

Who gets it, and who does not

The rollout covers Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and the Google AI Pro add-on for Education. It is English-only for now and reaches accounts gradually, taking up to fifteen days across both the Rapid and Scheduled release tracks starting August 26. Google is also opening a promotional window of higher usage limits that runs through October 1, which is worth using to actually test the thing on real work before the free runway ends.

Save your side panel history first

The older Gemini side panel in Chat is being retired for English-language users at the same time. Conversations your team has leaned on for context will not carry over automatically. Export anything worth keeping before August 26. Gems still work elsewhere in Workspace, but the side panel history does not follow you into the new command line.

Run it through the same access checklist as any other agent

A tool that can read Gmail, Drive, and Calendar on request is an agent with real reach into client email and files, whatever Google calls it. Before your team turns this on, treat it the way you would treat any new integration: know what data it can reach, decide whether a draft reply needs a human read before sending, and write the rule down somewhere your team can find it, not just in your own head.

Comparison of the old Gemini side panel in Google Chat versus the new Ask Gemini in Chat command bar.

  • One side panel per open chat
  • Conversation tied to a single thread
  • No cross-app search built in
  • History lives only in that panel
Rollout starts August 26 and takes up to fifteen days; the promotional higher-limit window closes October 1.
  1. 1

    Check your plan and track

Confirm you are on Business Standard, Business Plus, or an Enterprise tier, and note whether your domain is on Rapid or Scheduled release so you know roughly when it lands.

  2. 2

    Export side panel history

Pull out any Gemini side panel conversations your team actually references before August 26, since they will not transfer to the new interface.

  3. 3

    Set one access rule

Decide now whether Gemini in Chat can send on your behalf or only draft for review, and tell your team which one it is.

  4. 4

    Test inside the free window

Use the higher usage limits running through October 1 to try it on a real task, like pulling a client thread and a calendar conflict into one summary, before deciding if it earns a permanent spot in your workflow.

None of this requires rebuilding anything you already run. It just takes a few minutes this week to decide what Gemini in Chat is allowed to touch before it decides for you. If you want a second pair of eyes on where it fits your current setup, bring your workflow and we can look at it together.
