OpenAI's free AI training program for small businesses
Drafted through my n8n + AI pipeline, edited by me.
America's SBDC, the nonprofit network behind roughly 1,000 Small Business Development Centers, announced a partnership with OpenAI on September 30 to train advisors and hand free ChatGPT Plus access to small business owners who finish a workshop.
The OpenAI Academy will train about 150 SBDC advisors through its Community Trainer Program, with a goal of reaching at least 1,000 small businesses through in person workshops over the coming months. That's on top of an existing SBDC program called AI U, which has already certified more than 500 advisors on AI basics. The rollout will happen in phases, and the specific states have not been announced yet.
What the OpenAI and SBDC partnership actually offers
Advisors and business owners who complete a workshop get free ChatGPT Plus, a $20 a month subscription that includes faster responses, image generation, and access to newer models. SBDC CEO Charles Rowe put the goal plainly: small businesses deserve the same access to AI tools that large companies already have. Beyond the initial workshops, OpenAI and SBDC plan to co-develop playbooks and sector specific resources, which suggests this grows past the pilot if it works.
The AI training itself won't fix your operations
A workshop and a ChatGPT seat teach you how to write a better prompt. They don't connect anything to your calendar, your CRM, or your inbox. If your intake form still dumps into a spreadsheet nobody checks, a training session won't change that. The value of this program is the push to start, not a finished system. Treat the free seat as a trial you were going to run anyway, and plan to spend the first two weeks on narrow, specific tasks instead of open ended chatting.
Where to point a free ChatGPT Plus seat first
Draft your next three customer emails and compare them to what you'd normally send. Build one custom GPT that answers your most repeated question about hours, pricing, or scheduling. Summarize your last ten reviews into one list of what to fix. Each task takes under twenty minutes and gives you a clear before and after.
What to do while you wait for a workshop
SBDC centers run locally, one per region, so workshops will roll out center by center instead of all at once. Search for your state's Small Business Development Center, most sit under a .edu or state economic development domain, and ask whether they're part of the OpenAI Academy rollout. If they aren't yet, ask to be added to the list, since free training tends to fill fast. In the meantime, you don't need a workshop seat to begin.
- 1
Start free, today
ChatGPT's free tier and Claude's free tier both handle the starter tasks above without waiting on a workshop date.
- 2
Write down one workflow
Pick the task you repeat most, quoting, scheduling, or follow up, and write out every step before you try to automate any of it.
- 3
Save the subscription decision for later
If the free Plus seat comes through, you'll already know whether paying for it yourself is worth it once the workshop ends.

If you run a service business and you're already testing AI for scheduling, follow up, or reporting, a free seat and an afternoon workshop are worth taking. If you want help turning what you learn into something that actually runs on its own, bring me your workflow and we'll look at it together.
