ChatGPT's sponsored agents are already selling your leads
Drafted through my n8n + AI pipeline, edited by me.
Sponsored agents are OpenAI's new advertising format inside ChatGPT, live since September 16, and the first names attached to the pilot are Wayfair, Angi, Best Buy, Lowe's, Newegg, and VistaPrint.
Here's how it works. A brand buys an ad slot tied to certain kinds of questions. When someone taps that ad, a labeled agent run by the advertiser takes over the conversation, not ChatGPT itself. It answers follow-up questions, walks through options, and hands the user to the brand's own site or form when they're ready to buy. The exchange is marked as sponsored and kept separate from ChatGPT's own answer.
What a sponsored agent actually does
Angi's version is built for homeowners. Ask ChatGPT about a kitchen remodel, a roof repair, or finding a local contractor, and Angi's agent can step in, ask qualifying questions, and route the lead into Angi's own network before the person ever searches for a business by name. Wayfair's agent does the same for furniture questions: answering specs, comparing options, then handing off to checkout.
Why sponsored agents matter for service businesses
This is the part that should get a plumber, electrician, roofer, or remodeler's attention. Angi already sits between local service businesses and homeowners. Sponsored agents put that same intermediary directly inside the tool more people are starting to ask before they search Google or call around. If a homeowner's first stop for 'find me a contractor' becomes a ChatGPT conversation with Angi's agent, your listing, your reviews, and your phone number never enter that conversation at all.
Comparison of a homeowner's path to a local contractor before and after ChatGPT sponsored agents
- Customer asks ChatGPT for a local plumber or contractor
- ChatGPT gives an independent answer and may cite your site if it ranks
- Customer clicks through to your site or calls the number on your listing
The numbers behind the push
- OpenAI's ad business reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days
- The company is targeting $2.5 billion in ad revenue for 2026
- SE Ranking found only 3.63% of advertisers were also cited as an organic source in the same answer as their ad
- University of Michigan researchers found half of participants didn't notice clearly labeled sponsored content at all
What to do about it this week
- 1
Check your own citations
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, using your city and service. Note whether you're cited, and whether a sponsored agent from a competitor like Angi shows up first.
- 2
Tighten the raw material
Service area, pricing signals, and reviews on your own site are what organic citations pull from. A thin site gives ChatGPT nothing to cite even before ads enter the picture.
- 3
Watch your lead sources for a dip
If calls from your usual channels drop without an obvious cause, a sponsored agent intercepting that search is now a plausible reason worth checking, alongside the usual seasonal and SEO explanations.
- 4
Decide your posture on paid
Early reporting puts ChatGPT ad clicks around $3 to $5, close to Google Ads pricing. That's cheap enough to test one narrow keyword before the channel fills up with competitors.
None of this means pulling money out of local SEO to chase ChatGPT ads tomorrow. It means the path from someone needing a service to someone hiring a business now has a new toll booth in it, and that's easy to miss unless you check your own numbers for signs it's already taking a cut. If you want a second pair of eyes on where your leads actually come from, bring me your workflow and we'll look at it together.
