ChatGPT Ads hit $1 billion. Here's who should test it now

Drafted through my n8n + AI pipeline, edited by me.

A $1 billion annualized run rate. That's where ChatGPT Ads landed less than 200 days after OpenAI opened it to advertisers, and self serve access just expanded internationally. For a US service business still deciding whether to bother, the number that matters isn't the billion. It's the $25 daily minimum and the fact that there's no spend floor anymore.

OpenAI first opened a self serve ads manager to US advertisers in May, cutting the old fifty to two hundred thousand dollar spend minimums that had kept the channel closed to smaller advertisers. Since then adoption has moved fast: tens of thousands of advertisers are running campaigns, and the business scaled to a billion dollar run rate in under 200 days. This week OpenAI extended self serve booking to India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, a sign the platform is moving from beta experiment toward a permanent ad channel.

What ChatGPT Ads actually is right now

Campaigns run through ads.openai.com. You set a daily budget starting around $25, bid cost per click, upload creative, and ads show to users on the free tier and the Go subscription plan. A conversions API and pixel let you track landing page views, leads, and purchases back to a campaign, though reporting stays aggregated inside OpenAI's own dashboard. There's no cost per acquisition bidding yet and no outside measurement partner, so for now you're trusting the numbers OpenAI shows you.

Who should test ChatGPT Ads first

Eligibility is still limited by category: household goods, local services, travel, entertainment, digital products, and education. That list favors the kind of business Jeh works with, home services, local providers, tutors, and course or coaching sellers, more than general retail.

Table of ChatGPT Ads eligible categories and how well each fits a local service business

Eligible in the betaFit for a local service business
Local servicesYesStrong, this is the target category
EducationYesStrong, especially tutoring and course offers
Digital productsYesStrong for coaches and info products
TravelYesModerate, mostly businesses driven by bookings
Household goodsYesWeak, retail focused
EntertainmentYesWeak, not typical for a service operator
Three of the six eligible categories, local services, education, and digital products, line up directly with a service business's offer.

How to run the test without wasting a budget line

  1. 1

    Confirm your category is eligible

Check ads.openai.com against the current category list before you build anything. Outside household goods, local services, travel, entertainment, digital products, or education, you're not in the beta yet.

  2. 2

    Start at the daily minimum

Run $25 a day for two to three weeks before judging results. That's enough spend to see click and conversion patterns without betting real budget on an unproven channel.

  3. 3

Track leads yourself, not just the dashboard

Wire the conversions API to your CRM or booking system so a lead from ChatGPT Ads shows up next to your Google and Meta numbers. OpenAI's reporting is aggregated with no outside verification yet, so you want a second source of truth.

No CPA bidding yet

You can bid cost per click, but cost per acquisition bidding isn't live and there's no third party measurement partner on the numbers OpenAI reports. Treat this as a discovery channel to test alongside what's already working, not a replacement for it.

If you're weighing whether a $25 a day test belongs in your marketing budget, or want the lead data wired straight into the systems you already run on, that's the kind of question worth working through before you turn it on.
